I read an article about the amount of clutter in our living spaces. It went on to say that our living spaces reflect what’s going on in our world and around us. Where there’s clutter there’s chaos. And where there’s chaos there’s congestion. Not that there’s any connection between the two or a parallel with what’s happening in our own world.
When was the last time we did a real “spring cleaning” and went literally through everything? Spring cleaning? What’s that? Only when we move are we then forced to literally go through everything we have. EVERYTHING!!
Do you have any idea how liberating it is to shred mountains of paper that have been collecting over the years? Or how about tossing out items that don’t work any more or we’ve kept them “just because”? There’s a free-ing sense that starts to happen, a release. And the brain wants to fight it because this is comfortable. “Keep it. You might need it for later.”
One Hallowe’en I had a lady help me clean out my clothes closet. She put all of the clothes I didn’t need or didn’t fit into three recycle bags. Three of them! For a year they sat in the basement. My comfort zone said, “don’t get rid of them! You’ll want to wear them some time.” I was truly afraid to let go of them. More honestly I didn’t want to let go of my comfort zone. Not once did I go back into those bags. In the end the three recycle bags were dropped off at Goodwill.
It was a start.
And little by little I’m finding out that less is truly more.
Do I need it?
Or do I want it?
Simple sounds easy.
And yet it’s one of the hardest things to do.
It’s liberating.
It’s empowering.
It means there’s less to carry around.
It’s amazing how the shoulders feel when the weight’s been taken off.
Life can be simple.
